Sourdough Baking Equipment

Welcome to Sourdough Baking.  My goal is to help you produce beautiful loaves of bread in your home for yourself, family, and friends just like those pictured above. Getting started requires a few basic tools.  This page contains recommendations of tools that I currently own or have used in the past. Some of these are fairly common and you may already have them in your arsenal of kitchen tools.  If not, I have provided some budget-friendly recommendations below.

All of these products can be sourced from various vendors through Amazon and I have included links below that will take you to the appropriate page.  (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.)

Kitchen Scales

The most important tool in baking, other than your hands, is a kitchen scale.  There are many recipes that measure by volume instead of by weight, but you will not get dependable results time after time using this method.  Measuring by weight is the only way to go.

This was the first electronic kitchen scale I used during culinary school and in the early years of bread production.  It measures in pounds, ounces, or grams and is very accurate.  It has a maximum capacity of 11 pounds so it is suitable for small batch production. Escali Primo Digital Food Scale.

Here is the scale I currently own and is also a great scale for small batch production.  It has a 22 pound capacity and has a stainless steel finish that makes it easy to keep clean. It also measures in pounds, ounces, and grams. Nicewell Food Scale.

Basic Sourdough Bread Kit

There are quite a few small tools used in creating that perfect sourdough loaf.  You may have some of these already in your kitchen, but here is an example of a kit I have used that contains everything you need for the mixing, shaping, and proofing process.  The tools are high quality and, with the proper care, should last a lifetime.  Gettyware Artisan Bread Making Kit
